Wayne Public Library Exhibit Space Policy

The Wayne Public Library maintains exhibit spaces in the main library and the Preakness Branch. Exhibit spaces include exhibit cases, wall space equipped for gallery display or other spaces designated for exhibit display. These spaces are intended to further the Library’s Mission by facilitating the exchange of diverse information and ideas.

Library exhibit spaces may be used for exhibits or displays prepared by the library, the Friends of the Library or other organizations affiliated with the library. When the space is not being used by the library or library-related organizations, the space will be available to the public on equal terms, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting use.

The terms for public use of exhibit spaces are:

  • Exhibits spaces are available to organizations and individuals from both inside and outside the Wayne community. Priority will be given to educational, cultural, artistic, intellectual and charitable activities that will enrich the lives of the people of Wayne.

  • A Request to Display Materials must be submitted by the group or individual wishing to display. Samples of work may also be required before the request is approved. No display is confirmed without the approval of the Director.

  • Controversial work will not be excluded because of subject matter, however a community standard may be applied because of the diverse age range of the community served by the library.

  • The space is not intended for on-going exhibits. Scheduling will be limited as necessary to insure equitable access to the space for the entire community.

  • The library will provide some components for the hanging of art work or the display of other items. However, the group or individual is responsible for hanging or setting up the display within the limitations established by the library. Users assume responsibility for any damage to library property resulting from their use of library facilities. The Library may assess charges for damage.

  • The library does not assume responsibility or liability for materials exhibited in library facilities.

  • The provision of exhibit spaces for public use does not constitute library endorsement of the beliefs or viewpoints of topics advocated by exhibits or the individuals or groups responsible for an exhibit.

  • The exhibit will include a clearly visible sign identifying the individual or group responsible for the exhibit. Exhibits will not be publicized in a manner which suggest library sponsorship or affiliation.

  • No products including art work may be advertised, solicited or sold in library on library property. Art work may not be priced while displayed.

  • Items sold during their exhibit may not be removed from the exhibit before the exhibitor’s closing date unless a replacement acceptable to the library is provided.

  • Users assume responsibility for removing the exhibit at the time and in the manner specified when they schedule the exhibit.

  • The library reserves the right to cancel a reservation for exhibit space if the space is required for use by the library or library-related organizations.

  • The library retains the right to deny the space to any user whose planned use of the space does not comply with these terms. Violation of these terms may result in denial of future access to the space.

  • The Director is responsible for the implementation of this policy and for establishing administrative procedures for its implementation.
