How do I get a library card?

The Main Library and Preakness Branch are open for use to everyone. To check out books or others materials, a patron must have a card registered in the Wayne Public Library system. Anyone who lives in or owns property in Wayne is entitled to a free library card, which must be renewed every three years. A non-resident who does not live in a reciprocal borrowing area who attends school or works in Wayne is entitled (with student identification or proof of employment) to a "Courtesy Card" at no charge for a period of one year, and this card may also be renewed as long as the cardholder maintains their student status or employment in Wayne. All cards can be used in both locations of the Wayne Public Library System. Any card which is not used within a three-year period and which does not have an overdue or fine attached will become invalid and must be reapplied for. Apply for a Library Card

How long is the check out period and may I renew?

DVDs May be borrowed for 7 days. Periodicals may be borrowed for 14 days. New books, video tapes, music CD's and audiobooks may be borrowed for 21 days. Other materials will circulate for 21 days. All materials may be renewed provided there are no HOLDS on the item(s). Please see our Circulation Policy for further information.

How do I renew my materials?

Using your library barcode number you can renew via the telephone, on line from any home computer or in person at either branch. For assistance visit the renewal page.

How do I place a hold on an item?

There are numerous ways to reserve an item. One is by asking a staff member to place it for you. You may also place it yourself by way of the card catalog computers in the library or on the web site. Click for complete instructions for placing holds on online.

How much are fines?

Books, Periodicals, Audiobooks, Videotapes, Music CD's - $.10 per day 

eBooks, DVDs - $1.00 per day

Otis Digital Audio Players and are $2.00 per day.

Where can I return my materials?

All materials can be returned during library hours at the Main Library located at 461 Valley Road, Wayne, NJ or at the Preakness Branch located at 1006 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne NJ.

When the libraries are closed materials may be returned via the book drops located in the front of the Main Library and the Preakness Branch.

Does the library provide Internet Access?

Yes, the library provides public computers for in house Internet access with the use of a Wayne Public Library Card and Wireless Internet Access via Wi-Fi at both the Main library and the Preakness Branch.

Does the library have a meeting room?

Meeting rooms are available at both the Main library and Preakness branch.

Can you return books taken out of the main library to Preakness? Yes!

Books from the Main library can be returned at Preakness and books from Preakness can be returned to Main.

Do you use the same card at both libraries? Yes!

Just think of us as one big library in two places.

Can I request an interlibrary loan at Preakness?  Yes!

Interlibrary loan requests can be made at both the Main library and Preakness branch.
